College Athlete Teammate Training (CAT2) Certificate Program

CAT2 utilizes the Ethos phone-based learning app for content delivery and assessment.

Program Overview

The CAT2 Program is a 10-week educational fellowship designed to teach college athletes the advanced skills of being a great teammate and engaged citizen. Through structured coursework, experiential learning, and guided community projects, participants earn a College Athlete Teammate Training Certificate while contributing meaningfully to their team, campus, and community.

Purpose

This program fulfills TeammateU’s charitable mission to build stronger teams and communities by developing better teammates and more engaged citizens. It leverages athletes’ leadership positions to promote civic engagement, teamwork, and social responsibility in a nonpartisan, educational setting .

Learning Objectives

By the end of the CAT2 program, athletes will be able to:

  • Demonstrate mastery of the Four Cornerstones of a Great Teammate:

    • Show up with great energy

    • Build relationships

    • Understand your power

    • Make others better

  • Apply the Eight Core Teammate Strategies in team and community contexts.

  • Design and implement measurable projects that strengthen their athletic teams, campus, and local or national communities.

  • Communicate and promote positive, nonpartisan messages through approved social media and community platforms.

Program Structure

  • Duration: 10 weeks

  • Weekly Commitment: ~8 hours per week

  • Format: Combination of live sessions, self-paced lessons, and experiential community projects delivered via the LearnToWin mobile app.

  • Instructor Team: TeammateU faculty and guest experts in sport psychology, leadership, and civic engagement.

Athlete Responsibilities

Participants complete the following weekly requirements to remain in good standing and qualify for the stipend:

  1. Attend Weekly Class (1 hour) — Participate in live instruction focused on a weekly teammate concept.

  2. Micro-learning Assessment (1 hour) — Complete readings, videos, and a short LearnToWin quiz.

  3. Experiential Learning (2–3 hours) — Engage in community-building tasks such as organizing a team event, mentoring, or service project.

  4. Reflective Journaling (2 hours) — Submit journal entries connecting personal growth to team and civic engagement.

  5. Capstone Project (Final Week) — Design and present a project demonstrating application of teammate and citizenship principles.

Stipend and Verification

  • Participants who meet attendance, engagement, and learning benchmarks verified through LearnToWin earn a weekly stipend aligned with national undergraduate fellowship standards.

  • Additional social media incentive compensation may be awarded for verified posts that promote approved community-building or team development content, based on fair-market “per post” valuations.

  • Total compensation cannot exceed IRS and NCAA educational fellowship guidelines.

Educational Outcomes

Upon completion, athletes receive the CAT2 Certificate in College Athlete Teammate Training, recognizing their achievement in:

  • Team leadership and relationship building

  • Civic awareness and community engagement

  • Ethical and effective use of personal influence

  • Real-world application of team-building strategies

Example Experiential Projects

  • Organizing a voter registration or civic information event (nonpartisan).

  • Creating a “Hero, Hardship, Highlight” team bonding session.

  • Hosting a “Civic BBQ” where athletes thank and learn from local public officials.

  • Leading a “Teammate Challenge” on social media to encourage gratitude or inclusion within their athletic department.
